Twilight Times Publications Issue No. 17
News
Twilight Times Books Twilight Times Books was established January 1999 as an Internet epublisher. In 2004, we expanded our operations and evolved into a small trade publisher. Due to an exceptional front list of books, all with four star reviews, the print division of Twilight Times Books launched twenty-one titles in trade paperback in 2004. Over sixty titles are currently in print and we plan to release fourteen titles in 2008. TT Books is a traditional small trade publisher. By traditional we mean our books have national distribution and the author pays nothing for publication of his/her book. We currently publish literary works that are exemplary, that transcend genres and/or are beautifully written. We are highly selective as to what we will accept for publication. Our books are distributed internationally through BCH and Florida Academic Press (FAP Books, Inc.). Members of the media, booksellers and retails can download flyers, sell sheets, reviews and chapter excerpts from our media room. http://twilighttimesbooks.com/media-room/ Paladin Timeless Books An imprint of Twilight Times Books, a traditional small trade publisher. Book News New releases! Twilight Times Books is pleased to announce the recent release of Awkward Grace, inspirational by Jeff McCord; trade paperback. Promo blurb: In the small African nation of Burundi, a government incited massacre makes Mevin Ntwari a refugee. In the hills of East Tennessee, a reluctant sense of duty compels Ben Bellamy to lead an outreach committee. And somewhere between these two events, faith inspires an unlikely connection.
Reviewer comments: Author Profile: A native of Sandy Springs, Georgia, Jeff McCord now resides in Kingsport, Tennessee with his wife and three children. Awkward Grace is Jeff's debut novel. ~~**~~ Gate to Nowhere, time travel mystery by Leanna Sain; trade paperback. Promo blurb: Free-lance artist Emma Franklin inherits a farm in MacKinlay, North Carolina and stumbles upon a mystery involving the town's namesake, a man despised and scorned by everyone she meets. Determined to unravel the puzzle, she steps through an old rusty gate in front of her farmhouse and is suddenly thrust 177 years into the past and is faced with a myriad of circumstances that test her.
Reviewer comments: Author Profile: Leanna Sain lives in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina with her husband, Randy, and two teenage sons, Tyler and Ethan, whom she home-schools. Free-lance portrait artist, co-owner of two local retail stores and part-time farmer, she got the idea for her first novel at a friend's house. There she saw the "gate to nowhere" and knew she had to turn it into a great story. Gate to Nowhere is Leanna's debut novel. ~~**~~ One More Time, New Age by Ray Dreyfack; trade paperback. Promo blurb: They're crazy in love and living in sin. Famous bandleader Bernie Berne, whose father, a rabbi, has heart trouble, and lovely Ada Green, a talented sax player Bernie assumes to be Jewish. They want to get married, but turns out Ada is not Jewish and they realize their marriage would kill not only Papa but Ada's parents as well. What to do? No problem. They make plans to assure that in their next lifetime they will find each other and make their love legal.
Author Profile: ~~**~~ Seven Cities of Mud, historical by Florence Byham Weinberg; trade paperback. Promo blurb: Two radically different cultures, 16th-century Spanish and ancient Pueblo Indian, collide. Conflicts and passions explode--love and faith oppose anger, brutality, hatred, lust, greed and ambition--with tragic consequences.
Author Profile: ~~**~~ The Focus Factor, SF suspense by Darrell Bain and Gerald Mills; trade paperback. Promo blurb: A scientist whose family is killed by illegal immigrants decides to use his research on autistic idiot-savants to discover a solution to the problem. Before long, he finds himself inextricably involved in a conspiracy to not only solve the illegal immigrant crisis, but almost every other ill besetting America.
Reviewer comments: "Bain and Mills have written an impressive novel of the not too distant future that will make people think about the state of American politics and how it can be changed to create a better place for us all. Many of the ideas are not new but they are very reasonable and workable. This is another of those books I've read lately that should be required reading for everyone of voting age. Kudos to all for a job well done." ~ Reviewed by Barry R. Hunter for Baryon. Author Profile: Darrell Bain is the author of about two dozen books, in many genres, running the gamut from humor to mystery and science fiction to non-fiction and a few humorous works which are sort of fictional non-fiction, if that makes any sense. He has even written for children. For the last several years he has concentrated on humor and science fiction, both short fiction, non-fiction (sort of) and novels. Author Profile: Gerry spent most of his first sixteen years studying the piano, reading everything in print and ruining as many staged events as possible just by appearing in them. His promising career as a concert pianist came to an end when he found it involved hard work. Instead he entered Northeastern University. In return for his promise never to return there, he was handed a degree in electrical engineering. Misreading that as encouragement, he began a career in avionics engineering. When the engineering industry learned his true value, he wisely switched to sales, but divorce unhappily followed. He later met and married Lori, continued in sales, then launched his own business, selling it ten years later. Shying away from the purely technical, he enjoys writing character-driven stories dealing with human shortcomings, a topic in which he has a great degree of personal expertise. ~~**~~ The Last Protector, SF/F by Daniel C. Starr; trade paperback. Promo blurb: Scrornuck Saughblade, a tall, red-haired young man who wears a kilt and packs a "magic" sword, thinks he's just doing a good deed and maybe meeting a new girlfriend when he wades into a Saturday-night bar brawl to rescue serving-wench Nalia. Jape Phelps, the Ranger whom Scrornuck is sworn to protect, knows better: Nalia's ability to duck a punch before it's thrown is the visible display of a much deeper talent, a talent that just might save the world when the "streams of time" cross two weeks hence.
Reviewer comments: "The Last Protector is a fascinating meld of super-high-tech and medieval machismo, with its mystery cleverly revealed by bits and pieces of its backstory over time." ~ Reviewed by Lee Denning, author of Monkey Trap. Author Profile: Daniel lives on the banks of the Fox River outside St. Charles, IL. In addition to writing he spends his time paddling his kayak, touring the country by motorcycle, practicing the bagpipes, and substitute-teaching at his local high schools, where he is viewed as the "coolest sub ever." The Last Protector is Daniel Starr's debut novel. ~~**~~ The Melanin Apocalypse, SF by Darrell Bain; trade paperback. Promo blurb: A man-made virus is killing all the blacks in the world. The African continent is devolving into total and complete chaos. Blacks in America begin rioting and killing Whites. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta becomes the focal point of a vast political struggle for a cure or a vaccine, with some politicians preferring to let the disease run its course and rid America of its race problems once and for all. Israel and the Arab states go to war again. The oil fields of the Middle East and Africa are up for grabs... The CDC provides the only possible bulwark against the whole world falling into anarchy-and then it is attacked by rampaging blacks because of rumors that the government itself might be responsible for the lethal pandemic. The scientists, staff and the small CDC security contingent all have to fight for their lives, and for a chance to save the world from the most appalling conspiracy in history... Darrell Bain's most controversial novel since The Sex Gates.
Reviewer comments: "...I'd rate this as a satirical commentary on a par with Jonathan Swift's work, by a very able writer who sees clearly what fate can await mankind if hate is allowed to breed hate. A flag being raised to warn of danger ahead. "Highly recommended for any reader. This is a tale to enjoy, one to remember and one that will make you think as it forces us to face our biases. Well worth the time, a must read for any serious thinker." ~ Reviewed by Anne K. Edwards, author of The Last to Fall. ~~**~~ The Mudslinger Sanction, suspense by Gerald Mills; trade paperback. Promo blurb: When Dr. Gordon Whittier is kidnapped for bait, Jim sets out to rescue him against all odds. His powers are pitted against ruthless murderers, a brilliant computer hacker, the FBI's best, and the clock in a race to save Whittier's life. All he has to work with is a trail of clues and his talents, but to succeed he must learn to use his force against theirs.
Reviewer comments: "Gerald W. Mills again shows his mastery of technologies of all sorts: computer, helicopter, oil refining; his knowledge of geography, geology, weather patterns, medicine, the vagaries of the law, and the power of the press, not to mention his command of English, his wit, and his breakneck storytelling. Did I mention his ability to paint characters we come to know better than our own family?" ~ Florence B. Weinberg, author of The Storks of La Caridad.
Author Profile: Gerry spent most of his first sixteen years studying the piano, reading everything in print and ruining as many staged events as possible just by appearing in them. His promising career as a concert pianist came to an end when he found it involved hard work. Instead he entered Northeastern University. Edwards and Mayra Calvani; trade paperback.
Promo blurb: This book was written not only with the aspiring reviewer in mind, but for the established reviewer who needs a bit of refreshing and also for anybody--be they author, publisher, reader, bookseller, librarian or publicist--who wants to become more informed about the value, purpose and effectiveness of reviews.
Reviewer comments: "As an experienced reviewer I learned that I do not know it all and will keep my copy of The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing for reference. It is not a book I will loan out because it won’t be returned...If you want to break into book reviewing, The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing is a must-have reference. Heed the author’s advice and you can write reviews that will get you and the books you review noticed." ~ Reviewed by Sharon Broom, Armchair Interviews.
"The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing is a useful took for both amateur and professional book reviewers, as well as book review editors. There should be no doubt that the good tips, thoughtful perspective and resource information can be of considerable value to anyone wishing to practice this art." ~ Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford, Allbooks Reviews.

Reviewer comments: "...Celia Ann Leaman's poignantly powerful voice brings any genre vividly to life whether to she chooses to pen fiction, short stories, or an essay. Yet never has her voice proved so profound as in The Winnowed Woman.... "The Winnowed Woman reflects the thoughts and reflections of a woman in her maturity that has come beyond the vanity of youth to confront the challenges of middle age. Through the challenges of divorce, remarriage, in the face of death and disillusionment, Leaman recounts a spiritual journey of healing [that] reflects every woman who has struggled and overcome. A powerful and beautifully written book, The Winnowed Woman earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence." ~ Reviewed by Cindy Penn, Senior Editor, Wordweaving.com. "The author explains the meaning of 'winnowed' to us at the beginning of the book. It was aptly named since it separates the wheat of life and love from the chaff. The Winnowed Woman is every woman's story. Painful, daring, full of heart and sometimes, fear and anger. It shouldn't be missed!" ~ Reviewed by Joyce Lavene.
